Inner-City Disc Golf Clinic at Tyler
Mike Crowley, DNRC Manager at Tyler State Park contacted me a few weeks back to see if the BCDGA would be able to offer a short Disc Golf clinic to a group of 15 inter-city kids. As this would be a great opportunity to further our sport with younger participants, I readily agreed to give the clinic.
On August 1 at around 1pm, several vans pulled up in the Upper Plantation lot, and 15 kids piled out for the Disc Golf Clinic.
Although tired from several events that day, everyone quickly became interested in what they thought was just a bogus “wanna be sport”.
After a short explanation of the game and some throwing techniques, they divided into groups of 3 and 4 and hit the course.
All the participants’ faces lit up! They connected with the game quickly and didn’t want to quit when it was time for everyone to move on to their next activity. One teenage girl fired several “tomahawk” throws straight down Tyler’s fairways. The expressions on all their faces were priceless.
The BCDGA provided each participant with a used disc from our very large donation bin. All the leaders of the group were also hooked.
I fully expect we will be asked to do this sort of clinic again next year or perhaps again before this summer is out.
