WOMEN ONLY CLINIC 2007

By T.D. Ali Wilkinson

One of the primary focuses of the BCDGA has always bee to actively promote the growth, participation and awareness of the fun and upcoming sport of Disc Golf.  This organization year after year continues to host and sponsor various events to educate people, especially the local residents, about the benefits that disc golf has to offer.  In addition, assisting folks in leaning how to play the sport.

Naturally, we try to cast a wide net, not only to gain as many supports as possible, but to increase the diversity in our pool of players.  One group that the BCDGA has specifically tried to reach out to is the female player.

This past spring, in May, the BCDGA hosted for the first time a women only disc golf clinic at our home course of Tyler State Park.  This event proved to be a huge success.  Nearly thirty women of all ages, most of whom had never played before, participated.  We were honored to have a special guest instructor of five time World Champion Julianna Korver, who took time to show techniques applicable to both the novice as well as the veteran. After the tutorial everyone played a casual round of disc golf without keeping score, but simply to get a feel for the play action and to focus on how to throw the disc, using the skills they were just taught.  Every lady went home with a new disc of their own and Julianna also autographed discs for the ladies.

It is our and my sincere hope that those women who participated in this event will continue to play and encourage their girlfriends to try it as well.  We plan to continue to host this event annually, and we would love to form a women only league in the future as well.
